Our Restaurant

Swan River Fish Market was founded fifty years ago by Captain Don Sargent. Captain Don, seeking a retirement job after many years of sailing ships around the world, chose the scenic location by the mouth of Swan River and Nantucket sound for he and his son to sell fresh fish. The plentiful supplies of local fish and shellfish, as well as the Captain's insistence on quality, brought immediate success to the business.

Over the years the little fish market grew to include a carry-out window, with freshly steamed local lobsters, deep-fried clams and fish — another immediate success.

With only two changes in ownership since then, Swan River Restaurant and Fish Market has grown in popularity and size to become a landmark for visitors and native Cape Codders alike. Times have changed, but our insistence on quality and our pride in the freshness of our product have remained just as Captain Don intended. Throughout each day, fishermen, lobstermen, and shell fishermen bring in their catch to our bustling fish market, It is immediately prepared for sale in our market or sent to our restaurant for the freshest seafood dinners found anywhere. We take in only the best, and thereby maintain standards that no other establishment can surpass. Our fish — scrod, haddock, striped bass, and others — are caught by hook on small day-boats. Hook fishing produces the highest-quality fish, and it represents the most ecologically sound fishing method in the world. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of America's fish is caught by hook.

In these days of processed, high-tech food products, we are definitely a little old-fashioned. Of course, all our shellfish come from state-certified local waters. Our lobsters and fish come from icy Atlantic waters, from Chatham East to George's Bank. Come by and see how it used to be, and enjoy some of the freshest seafood of your life. The Burns family welcomes you.
